I like the idea that art can work in other contexts besides the sterile white walls of a gallery. I don’t see a great difference between art that serves a functional purpose and the sort that exists solely for contemplation. Artists I particularly admire have done a lot to break down the art/craft divide, and I make a lot of work that straddles that gap. As a designer, I realize that function comes with its own set of imperatives, but fulfilling them while achieving something artistically novel is uniquely satisfying.
